I didn’t post yesterday. I was on the road. So it’s fitting that today, I thank God for the roads that connect us.
Yesterday I left Mississippi and drove through Louisiana to Texas. But I also connected to my daughter in another state while she drove to work, and with my son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren face-timed me from another state while they waited in their car for the gates to open at their local enter a seasonal festival. That last call opened with the two-year-old’s shout, “I’m gonna ride the rides!” And ended with mine, “Send me a video of the greased pigs!” In addition to all those states, I connected with friends in London, Michigan, and Colorado while I drove.
Then last night, when I was struggling with some chaotic thoughts, a few of those friends shot me a quick text to touch base, and God prompted me to ask them to pray. They did. I slept. And those thoughts are clearer this morning.
Roads Matter
I’m sure I’ll give thanks for all those people sometime later this month, but for now, I’m grateful for all the means of connecting we have.
Did you know that when “the time came” for God to send his Son to save us the Romans pretty much ruled the world. That wasn’t great for the other nations who were ruled over, but it meant the world was more connected than ever before. The Romans built a fabulous system of roads to connect the peoples of the world? And those roads were relatively safe for travel because of the Roman army? And that most of the world spoke the Greek language? God worked those connections together to spread the Good News about Jesus. Roads matter.
I’m thankful today for connecting roads and whatever technology makes my phone connect over thousands of miles.
Come Alongside
I know we all have people we miss who we cannot reach. We grieve for those connections and long for a day when we’ll see them again. But there are other people who are far away, but not out of reach. Is there a road you need to find today?
I’d love to see some road pictures in the comments today. What is making a way for you to connect?
